Tetris Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Each time a major prize-giving event approaches, you'll find a clamor to include fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
