An underground market for unapproved slimming drugs is propelled by social media fitness personalities and vendors on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.
Investigational Treatment Gaining Traction Online
Retatrutide, which is still in clinical trials, is being advertised by social media influencers for its alleged fat-burning effects. Viewers are encouraged to message these accounts privately for source information, while also receiving discount codes.
Active Commerce on Social Networks
Separately, a robust market exists on messaging services, where communities with thousands of members share “before and after” photos, injection guides and assertions of next-day UK delivery. Vendors promote the drug there before directing buyers to WhatsApp for purchases.
Understanding Retatrutide
Retatrutide is an investigational injectable created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies suggest it could assist individuals lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.
Healthcare Experts Voice Concerns
However, physicians and chemists have warned that the distribution of what remains an unapproved drug in the UK is worrisome and could result in users injecting substances of uncertain source.
Several experts said the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the rising price of approved slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Position and Enforcement
Selling retatrutide on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed medication that must not be promoted or distributed for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Several content creators try to circumvent the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted drug, but advertising and supply can still breach pharmaceutical, marketing, and customer laws, potentially leading to fines, legal action or imprisonment.
Platform Response and Material Removal
Based on TikTok, the platform has taken down problematic material and prohibited related keywords and search suggestions. The company said it was dedicated to keeping the platform safe and allocating resources in strengthening enforcement strategies.
Online Marketplace Operations
Investigations also found communities with up to 9,000 members selling the experimental drug using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which functions like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with thousands of users, populated with images of slimming results, glowing testimonials and step-by-step instructions for preparing or administering at residence.
Within moments of joining one group, a vendor shared WhatsApp details, where the majority of purchases take place. The vendor sent an instruction manual and promised shipping within two days. When questioned whether the product was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a supposed laboratory certificate. None asked about body mass, medical conditions or past usage.
Product Information and Costs
Inside these groups, posts show dark colored parcels with postal service labels, stating to include new batches. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at residence with sterile water, or pre-filled pens typically sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When questioned how long a pen should be used, vendors give conflicting answers varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Platform Oversight and Safety Measures
A spokesperson for the messaging service said it actively moderated dangerous material on its platform including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Expert Cautions
“Individuals are administering substances they can’t verify. Even if the science behind this drug is sound, these digital products may not include what they advertise,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the surge in demand to recent price rises for approved slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, patients are using online platforms. But fake injections are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the environment they were made in was sterile,” she said.
Her staff has previously encountered individuals injured by self-injection from unconfirmed sources. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from Telegram or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” stated Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”
Producer Statement
A representative from Eli Lilly said retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority globally. “Consequently at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a Lilly investigational substance not yet approved … may expose users to possibly serious health risks”.
